1. What is the NDIS?
NDIS stands for National Disability Insurance Scheme. The NDIS was launched on July 1, 2013 and is now available across Australia (Note: rollout of NDIS in Western Australia is still occurring) (Ref 1).
The NDIS provides supports and equipment to people with a disability so they can fully participate in the community and reach their personal goals. The "NDIS provides people with disability with the choice of how, when and where that support is delivered to them. NDIS participants are in the driver’s seat, and can choose what works best for them" (Ref 2). People aged 7 - 65 years, who live in Australia, and have a permanent and significant disability are eligible for the NDIS. You can read more on the NDIS and Parliament of Australia websites. The Every Australian Counts website explains NDIS excellently in practical terms. |
"The NDIS provides people with disability with the support they need to live an ordinary life.”2
