Despite CF: Damien Becker Despite being told that international travel was a risk and logically impossible, Damien managed to satisfy his travel bug. "I have done long stints of travel overseas and within Australia in less than ideal environments and always (mostly) found ways to keep myself healthy." Damien has worked in community development for more than twenty-five years, mostly juggling workload and his health by combining part-time work with volunteering and the Disability Support Pension. Transplant opened up a new chapter in Damien’s life, particularly when becoming a first-time parent three years later with the birth of Harriet. "I never thought fatherhood would happen... and it is even better than I could have dreamt!” Now Damien is busy finding his creative voice through spoken word and poetry. "The words came quite quickly and naturally, and I found I had a lot to write about reflecting on life with CF and the way it has framed my humanity." His creative voice started a journey that led Damien to perform at Sydney Opera House as a NSW Slam Poetry Champion. "I will keep performing and writing, and if the creative flow continues, I can see a book or two emerging over the next five years." Watch this space! By Sandi Parsons
