May is Cystic Fibrosis awareness month. For a third year now, West Australian writer, Sandi Parsons, is helping to raise awareness through her 31 Days of Cystic Fibrosis. Despite CF: Cindy Watterson Getting her Chef's ticket was Cindy's dream — and Cindy's turned that dream into a reality as a business owner with two cafes and a coffee van. However, Cindy's choice of occupation comes with public commentary—commentary which has heightened during the COVID-19 pandemic. "Do you think you should be working when you're sick?" There are many variations of this question, and it's one that every person with CF dreads. For Cindy, the comments increased after WA's first lockdown. When faced with the dreaded questions while making coffee, Cindy turned the tables on one customer. "I have Cystic Fibrosis. Have you heard of it? It's the most common life-threatening genetic lung disease in Oz. You can't catch it. But you're right. I shouldn't work when I am sick. But with COVID reducing my turnover. I kind of have to at the moment. It's dangerous for my health to be in tourism these days." "Now, if I cough in front of a customer, I simply say, 'Sorry. Got a lung disease, not the 'Rona.' Most get over it, but it's still a real issue with public perception." Rather than give up on her dream, Cindy is looking to change direction in the future, focusing more on catering for events. In the meantime, Cindy is spending more of her time in the kitchen, away from the public. And she's hoping to turn an interest in photography into a passive income. "The feeling of being contagious due to their reaction is tiring and hard to deal with day in day out," said Cindy. " I don't cough like I used to now I'm on Symdeko, and that's a big win in these times." By Sandi Parsons
